Donation terms

What you agree to when you give monthly, how to stop, and what happens to your payment details.

What you are agreeing to

Setting up a monthly donation authorises us to charge your card the amount you chose, once a month, until you cancel it. The first payment is taken there and then. Every payment after that comes on the same date each month.

The amount never changes on its own, and we will never take more than you chose. You cannot edit it either: to give more, set up a second donation and keep the one you have, and to give something different instead, cancel the one you have and set a new one up.

We take donations in US dollars, and that is the figure that stays fixed. Stripe may quote and charge you in your own currency instead, in which case your bank will show the converted amount: that one follows the exchange rate, so it can differ a little from one month to the next.

If a payment fails, we keep trying for a fortnight. If it still cannot be collected, the donation stops.

How to cancel

You can cancel whenever you like, and you never have to ask us to do it for you.

Every email we send you about your donation carries a link to your own donation page. The link does not expire, so the email you were sent in month one still works in month twelve. Open it and cancel from there.

If those emails are long gone, ask us to send the link again. It goes to the address you gave when you set the donation up.

Cancelling stops the payments to come. It does not undo the one already taken: your donation runs to the end of the month you have paid for, and then it stops.

Refunds

The payment you are part-way through when you cancel is not refunded. It has been made, and your donation runs out the period it paid for.

Anything that went wrong is a different matter. Charged twice, charged an amount you never chose, or someone used your card without you knowing: email hello@activism.wtf and we will put it right. Come to us before you go to your bank. It is faster, and we would rather hear it from you.

Your payment details

Your card never reaches us. The payment page belongs to Stripe, your card details go straight to them, and what comes back to us is your name, your email address, the amount, the dates, and Stripe's reference for the donation. We store no card numbers, because we are never given any.

Stripe holds two roles at the same time here, and both are worth naming.

For taking your payment, Stripe acts on our instructions. We decide what that data is for, which makes us its controller and Stripe our processor.

For everything else, Stripe decides for itself. Preventing fraud, meeting the rules that apply to a payments company, running and improving its own service: for those purposes Stripe is an independent controller, and nothing we instruct governs it. That is how Stripe works for every business that uses it, and it means Stripe's own privacy policy applies to you directly, alongside ours.

Your donation, whenever you need it

See what you give and stop giving it from a page that is yours. The link is in every email we have sent you, and we will send it again if you have lost them.
